Hello, beautiful people! You know how I’m always talking about how the online sewing community is full of such nice, inspirational, and wonderful people? Well, Abigail of The Freckled Fashionista is one of them as she nominated me for the Blogger Recognition Award! Thanks “sew” much, Abby!
Here are the rules:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
2. Write a post to show your award.
3. Give a brief story of how your blog started.
4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
5. Select 15 other bloggers you want to give this award to.
Jumping right into #3 – I started Sew RED-y in the summer of 2014. By that time, I had been sewing consistently for 3 years and was enamored with the online sewing community. I wanted to be more than just a stalker (haha) and really dive into the online sewing world while hoping to inspire others with my projects. This summer will be my third year of blogging and I would never turn back – this space has allowed me to “meet” so many wonderful people and I don’t think I would be the sewist I am today without it!
#4 Advice – Photos! I’d say well-lit, clear, thoughtful photos are very important. I bought a DSLR camera for two reasons: To ensure I had decent photos for the blog I wanted to start and to get really good pictures during my belated honeymoon to Europe! While I know I can always improve on my photos (ain’t nobody perfect and my husband isn’t exactly a professional photographer – he’s getting better!), I think having the higher quality images really helps.
One of Abby’s pieces of advice was to blog frequently – and I absolutely agree – but I also think it’s important to put yourself out there. Just posting won’t get you a whole lot of followers right away, so participating in sewing community events like sewing challenges or pattern reviews really helps spread the news that your blog is here for everyone to see. Last year I teamed up with Cali Fabrics as a contributing blogger and this year I’m participating in the Day and Night Dress Sewing Challenge. I can definitely see a difference in my blog activity than when I was a little less active!
#5 Nominating other bloggers! Gosh, there are so many that I love and follow, here’s a few…
OK, so I did 16. I could do more but I figured I’m enough of a rule-breaker already! Go check out their stuff and THANK YOU again to Abby for the recognition! ❤

P.S. I think now would be a good time to announce that I just broke a little over 200 subscribed followers! I am so happy and humbled to have so many people make this sewing journey with me! Cheers to you and the next 200!
Congratulations on your nomination! Thanks, Rachel, for nominating my blog, as well. Your tips are right on. My goal for 2017 is to post more often and get more involved in the sewing web world!

You are so right about photos!! Professional quality isn’t necessary but it’s sewing: we need/want to seeeeeeeeeeeee all the things! I also love your point about joining in and putting yourself out there–it’s the best way to connect with new people. It can feel awkward at first but if you make new friends to talk sewing with, it’s worth it!
I am honored that you thought to nominate my blog: thank you!! I may not pass it on (I can never decide who to nominate, or figure out if those people have already been nominated, or if they would be unhappy if I nominated them, and ahhhhhhhhhhh so much pressure!) but I hope you know that I truly appreciate not just that you read my blog, but that we’ve become online friends over the past few years. You are awesome, and I swear to dog that if I am ever in AZ I am going to push for a meatspace meetup–I’ll even buy you a beer!!!! 😉

No worries about not passing it on! I know these things can feel a little like a chain letter, but I like discovering new blogs through these and the nominees are definitely deserving. 😉
The feeling is mutual with the blog reading and the online friendship – let’s get all sappy here! I am all for a meetup whenever and wherever we may be at the same time! I’ll get the pizza – you get the beer! 😉 Cheers! ❤
