(Sorry vegans, but I’m about to make a point!)

Well, how can you tell RED has been working out?

Don’t worry, I’ll flipping tell you and your grandma AND make exercise clothes and share them with the world!

I was kind of a gym rat when I moved back from Japan in 2008. My year in Japan was spent mostly sedentary (thank God I had a car…) and I felt like I needed to whip myself into shape before things got out of control after getting pretty out of shape (although I somehow managed to climb Mt. Fuji without dying. I came close to it, though). I kept up with exercise routinely until I was 28 and my back decided not to play nice. Long story short and multiple small injuries later, I got “old” and couldn’t keep up the same routine (I know, I know… I am young but my years of ballet, Tae Kwon Do, and bad luck caught up with me). Then I got a super great but super stressful job and DD makes delicious beer and… well you can figure out what happened. Back to sedentary life.

But I am ready to change…

… I am ready to take care of myself and listen to my body when it doesn’t like what it’s doing…

… I’m ready to get healthy again and give my body the love it deserves.

But only if I can swath it in Sew RED-y originals while doing all of that. 🙂

Meet the cropped version of the True Bias Hudson Pants, made up in poly/lycra fabric. I’ve made this pattern before (here, here, and here), so this version was a no-brainer for me. The beautiful black and white lacey flowery fabric came from SAS Fabrics here in Tucson. You’ve seen it before when I made my mom some Pneuma Tanks.

I thought these would be fun at the gym as I got tired of the same old black yoga pants day in and day out. They’re great for yoga and just lounging around…

Some days I change into my gym clothes at work and go straight to a class at the gym. I wore these out of work one day and was complimented on them by a coworker and asked if they were Lulu Lemon pants. I consider that a success. 🙂

By the way, my answer was, “Lulu Lemon? Heck nah, I made these!” And there was a thank you and a high five in there somewhere. Booya.

  1. How did I miss that there’s a cropped version of Hudson pants?! This pair has such a fun print, and I agree with your coworker that they look like fancy pants RTW activewear. I’ve only made Hudsons in pretty firm knits–awesome for the house, but not so much for the flexibility I need for barre and Essentrics. I have Jalie’s Cora leggings, but I haven’t gotten the chance to get it going in the queue yet. I should make some leggings of sorts to go with the colorblocked workout top that I made a while back. I’ve never given much thought to workout coordinates, but I think you’re right in that wearing your own creations gives you a boost to get the work done and just feel good while you’re doing it.

    1. All of my other Hudsons are basically around-the-house pants. This pattern is perfect for that, but I think they are well suited for the gym, too! They get a little warm, so I’ll stick to yoga and Body Pump only for these. No crazy cardio + tons of sweat, bleh!

      I just took my first Barre class on Saturday! I liked it a lot but the studio is far from my house. I still have 2 more classes left in the package I bought, so I’ll have to bust out these pants for one of those classes.

      I’m starting to get on a make-all-of-my-own-activewear kick. Hopefully it’ll keep me driven to work out! 🙂

      1. I do all my working out at home because uh, 4 kids in daycare while I’m working out…way more hassle than it’s worth. If I was honest, I was never consistent in getting to the gym in the first place. At home, I’m in my pjs mostly, and if I have 20 minutes to grab between picking up kids, I can do an Essentrics DVD or Classical Stretch or Popsugar or Jessica Smith on YouTube (she has a bunch of barre workouts and they’re all great). I always say fear the ladies who have you working out with no weights at all!

      2. Haha I believe that! Just holding positions for a long time is enough to make me cry. I applaud you on keeping up with working out at home. I tend to get lazy when I’m home, so I need to force myself to get out of the house to work out. But I totally hear you on the 4 kids thing. You have your hands full!

  2. They look great! I actually just made a pair of cropped hudsons for working out as well. I can’t wait to see what else you make. I am trying to vamp up my active wear as well 🙂 Something about happy active wear that makes me work out harder 😉

    1. Thank you! Some people don’t understand putting money and time into workout clothes when you can just wear ratty old shirts and stuff. It’s true, if we feel good in our clothes, we’ll work out more often and that much harder! 😀

  3. LOLOL at the joke at the beginning. 😉 I love your new workout pants–they look comfy and unique all at once! I can definitely see why your co-worker thought they were expensive RTW pants!

    I have lots of activewear fabric, but it’s mostly for Tom. I’d like to make some nice things for myself, though, since our dog is really active and we walk him for over a mile just about every day. I have some workout patterns from Sewaholic, but thanks to you I now see the potential of the Hudson pattern for a more relaxed fit.

    Unrelated, kind of, since you said you did ballet: is it high-impact? There is a studio locally that has an adult novice class that I am considering; I always wanted to try ballet as a kid but wasn’t allowed, so it would be perfect for my stunted childhood ballet ambitions, LOL. But I have bursitis in my hip joints and high-impact activity tends to leave me in pain for a few days so I’m nervous to commit. =/

    1. Thank you! I’ve made the Pacific leggings (coming soon) from Sewaholic and I love them, too! They’re super quick to sew, I highly recommend them! Time to treat yo’self!

      There’s not a whole lot of jumping (although some) but there’s a lot of leg movements that put strain on your hips and back. Being flexible is a big plus, which I am not. I took ballet for 8 years and one of my doctors said my ligaments and stuff in my back and hips are too loose because of it. I love ballet and think it’s a great workout, but I would be careful if you decide to try it. I hope I didn’t scare you away too much!

      1. I am glad to hear you love the Sewaholic leggings pattern, because I have it. 😉 And THANK YOU for your honest, experienced-based assessment of ballet. I am not a flexible person so I knew going in that would pose a challenge, LOL! But I think that, since I won’t be a “serious” student of ballet, it will be okay to at least try it. And if I am too uncomfortable after a few classes, I can stop going! I owe it to my frustrated-ballerina-inner-child to at least try! 😀

      The cropped version of the Hudson Pants are awesome – I want to make more for lounging around and running errands. Such a fast sew, too!
