A Renfrew for Mom

I’m one of those people who aren’t embarrassed when they see someone else wearing the same dress/shirt/shoes as them. Actually, I find it very amusing and have made sure that DD and I have had matching me-made pajama pants… twice. But I won’t bore you with plain ol’ pajama bottoms on this fancy schmancy blog. Nope, I’m gonna hit you with another Sewaholic Renfrew instead, this time for my mom!

IMG_5216Mama RED’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted to give her something me-made with love. She also hinted at how cute my original chicken mama Renfrew was when she saw it in person, and I picked up on that hint. 😉

Here’s my original, made for me:

IMG_0950I actually had her try it on when I was in New Orleans last year, just to check the fit. My original shirt was a size 8 and it fit her well although my tweak to make it longer was wayyy too long for her. I’m almost 5’8″ and she’s around 5’2″ (I think). She is also a fan of v-neck t-shirts. So even though v-necks and I don’t get along sewing-wise, I bit the bullet, took my time, and only had to unpick it once! That’s versus previous four times unpicking a v-neck with my Oh, Deer! Renfrew. Practice makes perfect, I guess.

Not too shabby…

For Mama RED’s shirt, I decided to go down a size since the fabric is pretty stretchy and she is built a tad smaller than me thanks to her basically living at the gym. I made a straight size 6 and didn’t tweak the length of the shirt at all. The length does not including the hem band since I left that off. I believe Sewaholic patterns are made for someone 5’4″, so since my mom is a little shorter than that, I figured that would be fine. I tried it on just to see how the fit was and it’s basically a belly shirt on me… but the feedback I’ve gotten from her is that it’s the perfect length. Yay!

I also made it short-sleeved since I really didn’t have enough fabric to do the 3/4 length sleeve as originally intended. New Orleans gets hot enough, I’m sure short sleeves will be fine. 🙂

Now we’ll have to coordinate our matching shirts when we’re together – we even have similar hair styles now, so that might get confusing, LOL. I know I would get a kick out of that… not sure if she would. 😉

Have you made anything matchy-matchy for someone? Did you wear them together and get some good laughs?

  1. Actually I’m planning to make matchy-matchy outfits for me and a good friend! She’s been bugging me to make her a dress and during fitting, I mentioned that I could make myself one too. Obviously we thought this was hilarious and now we’re planning to ‘accidentally’ wear them to the same pre-wedding event for a friend! I think it’s wonderfully good time and I hope you do wear your matching shirts with your mom 🙂

    1. That sounds so fun! In high school my friend and I coordinated for pajama day – same t-shirt, pj pants, and even hairstyle. We thought we were the bomb. 🙂 I’m sure you and your friend’s matching dresses will be the highlight of the night!

    1. I don’t think v-necks are supposed to be too hard, but I always have a tendency to catch the fabric wrong while sewing around the V and I get weird folded bits that I have to unpick. Just spazzing out I guess.

Make you and your husband matching v-necks! LOL kidding… 😉

  3. I actually owe my dearest friend a shirt identical to one I made last Fall. I still haven’t finished the pattern alterations! But her measurements have changed since we took them down the first time, so I suppose it’s just as well. We’re looking forward to arguing over who gets to wear their “The Shirt” when we get together!

    1. Just rock the twin look, haha! Sewing for others always kind of freaks me out because I sometimes have problems even fitting myself, much less another person. I guess things are safer with knits- they’re more forgiving. 🙂 Is the shirt you’re making for her a woven or knit?

  4. I haven’t made anything match-matchy. My 19 year old daughter wouldn’t hear of it. BUT, I do a Burda hoodie I made with that exact feather print fabric. I seen that fabric pop up quite a few times. So cute!

    1. A hoodie with this fabric sounds adorable! I love how soft and comfortable it is.

Haha I would imagine a teenage daughter wouldn’t want to be caught matching with her mom- maybe she’ll change her mind the older she gets 😉
